Cache (pronounced kash): Valuables or treasures that are stored or hidden.

That word alone sums up the essence of this new publication: to bring you some of the many hidden treasures that Lake County has to offer. This will not only help residents save some money, but also get more traffic through the doors of our local businesses. This publication will focus on coupons/specials or events, and in these tough economic times, coupons are a hotter-than-ever commodity. As recently reported on CNN, “Americans cashed in 3.3 billion coupons in 2009 – a 27% jump from the previous year when news of the financial crisis tipped the country into recession, according to a new report.” So there’s never been a better time to jump on the coupon wagon!

Lake County Cache is presented to you by Nancy Young. Having been born and raised in the Bay Area, Nancy Young made her living for the last 20+ years as a self-employed graphic designer, writer and marketing consultant. Her passion for work – second only to her son – was the reason she was able to permanently move up to Lake County last year, after having bought a second home in Kelseyville about 8 years ago. Best decision she’s ever made!

Over the years, Nancy noticed that there was no one source for coupons or events in this county. She found the occasional coupon in various local publications, or saw an announcement for an event here and there, but she always thought it would be nice to have a source that Lake County residents could count on and look forward to each month for discounts and free or low-cost events – especially these days, with county unemployment rates hovering at 20%.

Lake County Cache also will feature write-ups of its regular advertisers. This month, the highlight was Riviera Common Grounds Coffee House (see page 5). The Cache will include a seniors’ section as well; many businesses already give discounts to seniors and Lake County Cache will be a great way to get the word out.
While you won’t find The Cache endorsing political causes and candidates for office, they do encourage participation in the political process, and believe that every vote counts. They also will accept (as you’ll see on page 4) paid political ads that are in good taste.

Nancy gives thanks to the businesses that grace these pages, who gave “the new kid on the block” a shot at doing something to make life better for those of us who’ve chosen to live in this magical place! If you’d like to see coupons for any particular places, please let that business know… and let Nancy know too! Lake County Cache rates are very affordable – and Chamber members receive 10% off their first year of advertising.

One last note: Lake County Cache will be the new venue for Christmas in Clear Lake – the Shop Local in Lake County holiday event. For further information contact Lake County Cache or Lori Peters, Executive Director of the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce, at 994-3600.

Look for the premiere edition of Lake County Cache at your news stands. And, Nancy would love to hear from you. “The better I know you, the more effectively Lake County Cache will meet your needs.”

Have you heard of the <a href="http://www.lakeco-op.org/index.html"target="_blank">Lake County Community Co-op? First off – so that we are all on the same page, a “co-operative” is a group of persons with agreed-upon values, intentions and principals, working in cooperation to fulfill a community need. The LCCC’s intention is to provide healthy, locally-grown food to the community in a sustainable (green) way. LCCC was founded by JoAnn Saccato who has a wonderful “<a href="http://www.lakeco-op.org/original_vision.html"target="_blank">Original Vision” that is really worth checking out. (Click on the underlined words and you will be directed to that page.)

Many households in Lake County will travel out of the area to purchase organically grown produce and other types of health-foods at stores such as Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. As a member of the co-op you have the option of picking up a “<a href="http://www.lakeco-op.org/shop.html"target="_blank">CSA Box” of freshly picked, hand sorted fruits and vegetables on a weekly basis – you can also add freshly baked breads to your order. The co-op just recently added an on-line ordering system called <a href="http://www.lakeco-op.org/FOODS.html"target="_blank">FOODS (Facilitated Online Ordering and Distribution System.) With FOODS you can order weekly CSA Boxes, cakes, cookies, eggs and breads. The orders are delivered to one of many local delivery sites where you pick up your order.<a href="http://blog.tntstorage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/sidebar_membership.jpg"target="_blank">

Perhaps you are trying to shift towards feeding your family some healthier meals? Perhaps you are trying to make a contribution to lowering CO2 emissions? Maybe you like the idea of supporting our local farmers? Maybe you want to learn better farming techniques? Or, maybe you like the idea of less or no pesticides on your food? If these thoughts have crossed your mind, you might want to take a moment to check out LCCC.

The food is beautiful, organic, healthy and locally grown. The cost is comparable to what you would spend in any market. The process is easy. And at least for me, there is an absolute thrill I get each time I pick up a box and open it to see what is there.

Along with the food, LCCC provides different educational events, and has been working towards <a href="http://www.lakeco-op.org/comm_garden.html"target="_blank">community gardens. LCCC is currently helping the Highlands Senior Service Center attain their long time dream of having a community garden. Here is LCCC’s most recent invitation to the community:

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – The Lake County Community Co-op invites the community to a unique garden tour in Kelseyville on Saturday, Aug. 14.
The tour takes place from 10 a.m. to noon.
Meet at the home of Monte Black and Ancient Lake Gardens, 8993 Soda Bay Road in Kelseyville. From Kit’s Corner on Highway 29, take Soda Bay Road for about three miles. Park across the road from the farm’s property entrance and meet at the gate of the entrance.
The tour is free and open to Lake County Community Co-op members and the public.
Experience Ancient Lake Garden’s food forests, which mimic the resilient and beneficial relationships between plants found in natural forest ecosystems.
Food forests typically include complex perennial polyculture plantings, rich in biodiversity and productivity.
Local residents and permaculturists Mari Silva and Grover Stock will share their conscious designs.
In their garden, you’ll learn about guilding, swaling, and contouring to eliminate soil erosion and water waste. Learn why they emphasize growing soil and beautiful perennial vegetable and flower gardens.

Pieces Boutique

Imagine this; not to be sexist, but this may be easier for women than men. You have a lovely wedding to attend tomorrow and you haven’t a clue of what to wear. The seasons are changing from winter to spring. You have been bundled in jeans and sweaters all winter and you are anticipating the warmest day of the year, and are feeling giddy about actually bearing your arms for the day. You come to the conclusion, “I need a new dress.”

Now I don’t come to this conclusion very often, so when I do it is quite urgent. I came to the understanding that I needed a new dress not too long ago on a Friday afternoon. Since I was working in the Kelseyville area that day, my thoughts were to hit one of the boutiques in Lakeport after work. I planned to leave Kelseyville at 5:00 and would surely be able to make one of the shops which must be open until 6:00 – WRONG!

I am not all that familiar with Lakeport, and if I am in need of a specific outfit, am one to travel out of the county to buy that outfit. Upon arrival at my first choice of shops, I found the business hours to be open until 6:00; however, the shop was closed at 5:15. So I headed to my second choice, which also had business hours posted until 6:00, but was closed at 5:20. Feeling a bit frantic now, I walked to my third choice and found the business hours posted that they were only open until 5:00. I must mention that I happened upon a lovely store with adorable clothes which was open – but the attire was not appropriate for a wedding.

I gave up and went home frustrated. That evening I spent 1.5 hours of my life searching for “the perfect outfit” for the wedding. I did find a couple of outfits, but they were not dresses and they had sleeves – I just want to go to the wedding in something that made me feel feminine. To make the situation worse, the weather prediction was for it to be a hot day for the wedding. I was not looking forward to worrying about creating sweat marks in my sheer but sleeved blouses, in addition to looking butch.

I woke up early Saturday morning knowing that my mood that day would be much happier if I had a new dress for the wedding. I had to work that morning, so I needed to get very creative with my day. I went in to work an hour early so that I could take an hour for lunch to try again to find a dress. I flew into Lakeport to choice #1 again only to find a sign on the door stating, “Sorry for the inconvenience, but we will be closed today.” WHAT?! – you have no idea… I am sorry for whatever drama was transpiring in the shop owner’s life to cause them to have to close for the day (and early the prior night), but I was really having a hard time feeling sympathetic at that moment.

That was when I quickly made my way further into Lakeport, praying that any shop was open. To my absolute delight there was a shop open. I had passed by the window many times and had been intrigued, but had not entered assuming this was a Sonoma-style expensive boutique – but perfect for wedding attire. By this time, I did not care what I spent to bare my arms at the wedding, and I needed shoes too. From the moment I walked through the door, I knew my world was good for the day. There were so many beautiful, spring dresses to choose from I was overwhelmed. Remember at this point I only had 30 minutes to find my dress and shoes.

The wonderful shop owner provided me with options while I threw them on and off in the dressing room. She was my personal shopper; I could not have done it without her. After trying on at least 15 dresses, I settled on two (one for the wedding and one because it was just too cute). Then I realized that I needed a sweater to cover my shoulders later in the evening – not a problem, with help from my personal shopper it was found. I was out of time by now, but still needed shoes. My personal shopper floated about the store bringing me shoes to try and the third pair was perfect – and so comfortable. OK, I needed to pack up and leave, Now. While at the counter, I spotted a pair of adorable sandals which were my size; I added them quickly to my pile.

So here I am; two dresses, sweater, shoes and sandals. I handed over my debit card to pay as I heard her tell me my final bill of $76. I thought to myself, “Well that was a great buy.” But it did not really register how great the buy was until I was on my way home. How did I get all of those beautiful items for $76, I surely should have toppled well over $200? That is when I looked over at the bag which contained my recent purchases. It was a wonderful purple bag with an adorable business card attached in the top middle of the bag. The card read, “Pieces Boutique – A unique resale shopping experience!” Unique! I’ll say, I did not even realize I was in a resale store!

Thus the topic of my Highlight of the Month. We have wonderful businesses here in Lake County who can use a bit more of our attention. Pieces is located on Main Street in Lakeport and is owned and run by Danna Bell – For more information, please visit her wonderful website at Piecesboutique.com. Even better than that, go visit her store at 115 N. Main Street, Lakeport.

changing the world one gift at a time

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,775 groups with 7,090,000 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them’s good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on “Browse Groups” above the search box. Have fun!

~The Freecycle Network. “freecycle.” http://www.freecycle.org/ 3 April 2010.

The Freecycle Network™ is an internet-based web of members who give and receive freely. Freecycle was founded in Tucson, Arizona by Deron Beal in the year 2003. The Freecycle concept has since spread to over 85 countries, where there are thousands of local groups representing millions of members. At this time The Freecycle Network is keeping over 500 tons per day out of landfills.

Members of The Freecycle Network post items via e-mail, passed through a local volunteer who has the position of the “moderator” of the group. Items are posted to be “given” freely to others that want the items, or posted as being “wanted” by members with a desire for specific items that may be available. The concept is to recycle the unwanted items rather than sending them to landfills. There are many reasons why others may want or need items being discarded – from wanting scrap material for group craft projects to desperately needing a bed for a toddler who has none. My first use of Freecycle was to accept a young chicken who was being bullied by the other chickens in her group. I still have that cute little chick; she gifts me regularly with beautiful fresh eggs and stays close by my side while gardening so she can eat the big bugs that scare me.

Giving instills a sense of generosity and it strengthens local community ties and promotes environmental sustainability and reuse. We have groups locally for the Lakeport/Kelseyville area and for the Clearlake area; at this point in time, the combined membership for these groups is 910 members.

The Freecycle Network is a private, nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of Arizona. Their application for federal nonprofit status was approved in November, 2006 by the IRS. It is great to watch the items that move over the Freecycle Network. Please click on the link below and make yourself aware of the local availability of this group; you can just brows at your desire, or you can become a member and watch the action happen through your e-mail: <a href="http://www.freecycle.org/"target="_blank">http://www.freecycle.org/

You can contact Bessie via e-mail at Allis-his@att.net or, you can call her at 707/287-3528 or 707/263-4266.

Our relationship with Bessie Sunday began one day through the Freecycle group (which we will speak to in next month’s newsletter). Bessie realized that people were in need of specific items and people were offering to give specific items, but the two were having a tough time connecting with each other; herein is where Bessie works her magic. (Or shall we call it her blessing?) Bessie feels it her calling to help those who desire to give, to connect with those in need – and she does a great job of it!

Bessie collects clothing, food, furniture, household items and much more, and with the help of wonderful volunteers, the items are sorted and placed with individuals and families in need. Bessie used to keep boxes upon boxes of items in her home and in her van. She would then drive to visible locations on the weekends and display what she had for people to take freely. Word of mouth spread and when a family was in need, they would look for Bessie at the locations she frequented. Bessie is now able to work from TnT Storage in Kelseyville so that she has a central site to receive and distribute the inventory.

Bessie was born in Savannah Georgia and was raised in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. She and her family moved to Lake County 22 years ago. Bessie is very involved with her church and her faith that she will be able to continue her work, comes from her belief that she has been called to and can make a difference in the lives of others. Bessie has a seemingly unlimited amount of beautiful energy, and she continually hunts down, sorts and distributes items to families in need. It is a pleasure to witness her with coffee cup in hand, taking in donations, directing her volunteers, sorting items, checking on the computer, and giving out donations while chatting and singing beautifully the whole time.

The stories I hear from Bessie are heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. I hear many stories of single mothers who have Nothing for their homes; no dishes, no beds, no chairs or tables, no washer and dryer, no refrigerator – it is all they can do to keep a roof over their babies’ heads. To these people in need, our items which we plan to take to the dump, are in the truest sense “treasures”. I hear of people who are disabled or elderly and are on fixed incomes who would like a working television, or a bookshelf, or even a comfortable chair. I hear of people who have suffered devastating losses due to the economy who would like some clothes to wear to job interviews. Most stories tell of a heartbreaking situation but it makes you smile when you hear how grateful the recipients are. Many of these people in need do not have the luxury of a computer, nor do they have the skills to work one – their only means of locating resources are friends and word of mouth.

All of Bessie’s work relies on donations, even the fuel for her vehicle – if there is no fuel, the van does not move. Bessie is able to locate and distribute many of the items through Freecycle, accessed via an internet connection which she pays for out of pocket. She must also maintain a cell phone account so that people can contact her. Bessie feels this work is her calling and therefore, has ceased her work as an independent contractor-auditor to allow her to be available for those in need. If you have items that you would like to donate, if you are in need, if you know of someone in need, or if you would like to make a monetary donation, please contact Bessie at allis-his@att.net or 707/287-3528 or 707/263-4266.

Lake County International Charter School

Lake County International Charter School (LCICS) was founded five years ago, and today has about 100 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. LCICS is a tuition-free, K-8th grade public, school that is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World school™ and WASC accredited, providing students with an inquiry-based, enriched education in a nurturing environment. At LCICS, students are taught to become competent and self-motivated individuals with a commitment to life-long learning, enabling them to reach their full potentials as literate, knowledgeable, principled and responsible global citizens of the 21st century. LCICS is the only site-based charter school in Lake County and students from all over Lake County attend. The school’s goal is to create lifelong learners through the International Baccalaureate methodology, which isn’t book-based. Rather, it teaches children to love learning so they are productive citizens of the world.

LCICS is a public school, and the only site-based charter school in Lake County. LCICS gets funding from the State based on attendance and enrollment, (similar to how other public schools are funded). What is different for charter schools is that facilities are a large cost, and charter schools cannot float bonds to buy or construct the buildings. Therefore, charter schools depend on community support and involvement to meet their needs. As with so many non-profits, State budget cuts have hit the school hard. The school is tuition-free and relies on donations from the school’s families, other community members and businesses. There are many ways to assist LCICS; if you are interested in supporting LCICS or making a donation click on this link – Support LCICS

For the past two years LCICS has marked some important milestones, including posting a 19-point Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) score improvement in 2009, raising it to 739, and a 100-point jump in its Academic Performance Index, bringing it to 839 points. In 2008 the STAR scores had increased by 17 points, so to be able to achieve such incredible growth for two years running is proof that LCICS’s system is working. Since LCICS was founded, the number of charter schools across California has nearly tripled. Approximately 809 charter schools with 341,000 students now operate around the state, according to the California Charter Schools Association. In the 2003-04 fiscal year, there were 382 charter schools, according to the office of Gov. Schwarzenegger. This fall alone, 88 new charter schools – with 56,000 students – have opened, accounting for the largest single-year enrollment increase in history, the California Charter Schools Association reported. One in every six charter schools across the nation operates in California. There are 4,900 charter schools educating 1.5 million children across 39 states and the District of Columbia, according to figures provided by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools.

The school conducts several fundraisers; spaghetti feeds, booths at events, and car washes are some of the methods used to raise money. For more information, or to donate to the live or silent auctions, call the school at 707-987-3063 or visit its Web site at www.lcics.org

With State and Federal resources being cut it is becoming apparent that more assistance from the local community is needed. We would like to bring more awareness to the needs of seniors in our community. And perhaps by becoming aware, we can all give just a little in some way to help the ones in our community that have already put in their time. There are individual senior centers in nearly every city and town in Lake County; For contact information click here: Senior Centers

LCSeniors.com provides a central location to show resources and services provided to seniors in our area. The website lists references such as a Senior Resource Directory. The resource directory has phone numbers and links to agencies from the American Cancer Society to End-of-Life Resources. The site provides contact information for all of our local Senior Centers, and you can also find information on local happenings that support and bring joy and comfort to our seniors.

If the internet is not your thing, you may want to share with your family that “Senior Moments” airs on our local radio station KPFZ 88.1 on the FM dial, Thursdays at 5pm and repeated at 11pm. This radio show is hosted by Buck Bouker discussing issues affecting Seniors Citizens, local events, and our county’s senior centers. Tune in, call in, hear what’s going on and be heard! KPFZ is on the web: kpfz.org and a social network for the station is found here: kpfz881.ning.com

Lakeport Senior Center is hosting a “Save Our Services” (S.O.S.) pledge drive. Another round of budget cuts has put Lakeport Senior Center in danger of closing the doors and stopping vital services to the seniors in our community, which includes Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels serves hot meals and personal contact to homebound seniors that rely on them. The past few years have seen an increase in cost and number of meals delivered, but the budget has been cut.

We would like to take this time to wish all of you Happy Holidays. We hope that you are all able to find joy, peace and comfort with your families, your friends and yourself this season and always.

As we celebrate this season we are reminded of others who are much less fortunate. Instead of highlighting one charitable organization this month, we chose to mention may groups who offer help, food, warmth and assistance to others in our community who are unable to provide these basic necessities for themselves and their families.

If you are able to help another in our community, please take a moment to do so. If you are in need of assistance, please take a moment to ask for support. Here are just a few of the organizations working to provide a bit of cheer and support to our area.

The City of Clearlake has a wish-tree located in the lobby of Clearlake City Hall, 14050 Olympic Drive

Umpqua Bank has wish-trees located in their lobbies at 4280 main St., Kelseyville and at 805 11th St., Lakeport

Westamerica Bank has a wish-tree at their branch in Upper Lake

Donations for Food and Funds are being accepted in Nice. Contact Pet Acres 707/ 275-2729 or Clarke’s Collectibles 707/ 274-9175

The Upper Lake Fire Auxiliary Christmas Cheer Program is raising funds and collecting goods to distribute in holiday baskets.

The Christmas Basket Fund – a collaborative effort between Lake County Publishing, Lakeport Rotary Club, Bruno’s Shop Smart, Umpqua Banks, Westamerica Banks, Lake Family Resource Center and Lake County Community Action Agency – provides Christmas baskets to those in need during the holiday season. This is the program’s 25th year. They will distribute 1,200 baskets, 600 to the North shore and 600 to the South shore.

You will find food donation bins at all of your major grocery stores.

Coat & Blanket Drive in conjunction with Lake County Community Resources is looking to help our Lake County homeless this season – coats, jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, blankets, quilts, hats, gloves, and shoes are needed. The goal is collect 100 blankets and 100 coats before Dec 15th. You can bring your donation to the Middletown Middle School office or contact Sandi Watson @ 928-0430 or 529-8111

There are so many in our community who can use help, understanding and support this winter. Please consider (if you are able) to take a moment to share some of your abundance with others; whether you have food that you are able to donate or a warm thought you are able to share, every bit makes a difference.

update 12/09 This year was another huge success. Thank you to all who helped with this program.

Totes for Teens was started six years ago by Cheri Johnson as a way of providing something nice for our teenagers in Foster Care. Totes for Teens services all teenagers in Lake County from ages 13 to 18. This year there will be 51 girls and 60 boys for a total of 111 totes. Teenagers are often forgotten kids during the holidays, as the younger children are the primary focus. The program is currently supported by the Women’s Golf Groups from Hidden Valley Lake, Rob Roy Golf Course at Cobb, Buckingham Golf Course in Kelseyville and the Men’s 18 and 9-hole groups at Hidden Valley Lake.

Totes for Teens will spend the majority of the month of November collecting items to fill the totes (duffel bags) for the teenagers of our county who are in a foster care situation. On the Monday after Thanksgiving, there is a “stuffing” party at which all the bags will be filled with items donated by our community. There is a list of items that changes daily, so it is best to contact the organization to see what is still needed. Why a duffel bag? Children in a foster situation often have to move from home to home and it is hoped that having “their own” bag to fill with “their own” belongings would be of some comfort to the children as they are experiencing uncomfortable times. It is interesting to ponder the wish-list of items, and to realize that these children do not have a permanent parent to provide some of the basic items that we take for granted. To a child in a foster situation, having their very own toiletries or blanket could mean more to them than you or I can imagine. Many of these teens do not know what it is like to receive a “new” T-shirt or “new” socks.

Last year, Totes for Teens was able to supply wrapped gifts to the children to be given to their Moms and Dads. The gifts were wrapped and had a name card and a sticky-note stating what the gift was so the child could put their name on the card and knew what they were gifting. Also included in the totes are 3-4 Christmas cards with postage, so the children can send them to Grandparents, Parents or Friends.

I appreciated being able to serve as a collection site last year for this organization. This year we will be taking collections at Spruce Grove Storage 11360 Spruce Grove Road 994-9900, Lower Lake, and at TnT Storage 3962 Big Valley Road, Kelseyville 279-9090. It was personally rewarding to go shopping for the totes. I think we found some T-shirts that were inexpensive but quite cute for teens, some travel-sized deodorant and toothpaste for boys and girls and a few gifts for parents that did not cost more than a few dollars apiece.

Each year the program becomes more sophisticated and the quality and quantity of items increases. New items added to the list this year are a basketball for each boy, a beach towel for each girl and standard-sized pillow cases. Totes for Teens is hoping someone will be able to donate a new standard pillow for each recipient, but for now having their own pillow case would be wonderful. Following, you will see a Boy’s List and a Girl’s List, but the lists are updated daily. To find out current needs please call:
